Thank you for reading our privacy policy.
We respect the privacy of our users and are committed to the security of your personal data as well as it’s fair, lawful and transparent use.

2. What personal data we collect, how and why we collect it.
- The randomly generated short URL service is ad supported and free for end users.

- By using the free service your IP address will be logged and stored in our secure system for the sole reason of removing or blocking users in the event of a violation of our terms of use, and for law enforcement reporting in the event of a serious breach of our terms, such as using our service to link to child sexual abuse material or other illegal content. (Any such reporting will be in accordance with this policy).
- No other personal data is collected when using the free service.
- When using our premium service or purchasing ad space, you will be required to register an account and provide us with further personal details for the correct, secure operation of this website, the management of your premium service and compliance with any legal age verification laws if appropriate.

This data is not stored or visible in any way. It is anonymised automatically and cannot be used to identify you further by us, our users, or any third party.

- Any method of data collection for marketing purposes will be clearly marked as such and offered on an opt-in basis only.
2a. The data we collect about you.

2b. How and why your personal data is collected.
We may obtain your data through different methods and process your data for different reasons. Normally the method through which your data is collected relates to how your data will be used. As above, a collection method listed here does not mean we will use such a method, only that we may if it is necessary for the operation of a website or service.
Interacting with the website:
- Comments: Occasionally, the website may allow users to leave comments on posts and pages. When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help in spam detection. You will be asked for either login details, or a name and email address to leave a comment. This is to ensure a real person is writing the comment and to protect our websites and users from bots and spam. It is also a deterrent to the posting of illegal, hateful or otherwise harmful comments of which we have a zero tolerance policy. Email addresses entered here are never used for any other reason and will not be transferred, sold or used for marketing communications either within the company or externally.
Why we collect this data: To ensure the website operates and maintains a working comments system that enhances the user experience while protecting against malicious use.
(Note: Currently blog post comments are disabled on this website. This section is included for single posts where comments may be enabled individually for specific reasons). - Uploading media and posts: If the website allows you to upload media or create posts, you will be required to enter login details, or your name and email address. As per the comments system, these details will not be used for any marketing activities.
It is your responsibility to ensure all personal data is removed. We can not guarantee the security of your data if it is uploaded by yourself to a publicly available area on the website. Specifically, if you upload images, you should avoid uploading those containing embedded location data (EXIF GPS tags). While we have systems in place which automatically strip EXIF data from uploaded images, we can not guarantee all data is removed on every occasion.
Visitors to the website could download and extract location data from these images. If you upload anything containing personal data by mistake please contact us using the details at the top of this policy so we may remove your data from being publicly visible. Please note this may result in the complete deletion of your upload.
Why we collect this data: To ensure the proper use of the website while allowing external uploading, and to protect other users from malicious content.
(Note: In general POR.Nz does not allow user generated content on the blog or other site pages. However, this section is included for the benefit of guest bloggers and content providers whose content we may occasionally feature). - Cookies: While using the website we may automatically collect specific data using cookies. This can be information regarding the equipment used to access the website, your browsing actions and patterns, location or other similar statistical data. For more information on cookies, what they are and how to control them, please go to our cookie policy page.
If you have an account and you log into the website, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we may also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices.
Why we collect this data: We collect data via cookies for various reasons relating to the proper operation of the service and website. These include remembering your login preferences, ensuring our URL shortener and e-commerce systems operate correctly and analysing and understanding our website traffic. - Embedded Content: Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if the user had visited the host website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to the content providing website.
We will only embed content on the website from trusted sources. Most commonly image hosting websites, social media sources, and video hosting services.
This type of content will be governed by the privacy policies of the host website. We have no control over the external policies of other website operators or how your data may be used by any external companies.
Why we collect this data: We do not directly collect data via embedded content but would advise you to read the privacy policies of any embedded content provider we may use.
Direct interaction with our services:
Through directly interacting with our URL shortener, e-commerce systems or entering into other correspondence with us via email, phone or post, you may provide us with personal data. We will only ever ask for the minimum required information to fulfill the specific reason we are requesting it.
- Creating a user account: The website may allow users to create user profiles and accounts. To do this we may need to collect data such as your name, email address, physical address, username or other identifying data.
Why we collect this data: We would need to collect this data to ensure the secure and safe operation of your profile or account. - Subscription to services, publications and marketing: You may provide us with personal data in relation to any subscription services we may provide, notification of updates or publications and for marketing purposes. This data may include your name, address, email address and other contact and account preference information. We only provide these services on an opt-in basis. You can opt out of these services at any time.
Why we collect this data: To provide the services to which you have subscribed. - Competitions, promotions, surveys and feedback: We may occasionally collect personal data in relation to promotions, competitions, surveys, and when asking for feedback on our services. The data we request in these circumstances will be specific to the reason for it’s collection. Any data collected under these circumstances will be subject to each promotion or competition’s individual terms and conditions which will explain how the collected data is to be used in more detail, including if the data is being collected for and by ourselves, by us on behalf of a third party (ie. a competition sponsor), or directly by a third party through embedded forms, links or email thus bypassing us altogether.
Why we collect this data: To gather the necessary information needed to fulfil the requirements of any optional competition, promotion, survey or feedback campaign we may run. - Collecting payment and financial data: This website may offer products or services for public sale. This is done through an e-commerce system which uses third party payment gateway providers to process payments.
Regardless of the payment gateway provider used, we can not see, do not store, and DO NOT have access to your payment card details in any way.
When you make a purchase, you are routed through a secure payment gateway, and it is the payment processor that gathers and processes your payment details.
We will NEVER ask for passwords or PIN numbers. We will NEVER ask you to provide us with bank account details through any social media or insecure message system, or in an unsolicited phone call or email. We will NEVER ask for your payment card details to be provided in any way, other than through our payment gateway.
If you receive any such request, DO NOT REPLY. Instead contact us using the email address at the top of this policy immediately.
Why we collect this data: We do not directly collect payment details or financial data in relation to the premium services we offer. This information is securely processed on our behalf by our payment processing provider. - Using our free URL shortening service to create short URLs: When using our free service to shorten a URL, your IP address will be logged in our secure database against the entry for the URL. This will be the only personal data collected and is done so to enable us to:
(a) Identify URLs in the event of a user deletion request.
(b) To block those who violate our terms and conditions.
(c) To provide data to law enforcement agencies in the event of a serious violation. (For example, using our service to link to child sexual abuse content).
Any IP addresses shared with such agencies will be done so only if officially requested in a legal manner under UK law, after we have made such agencies aware of these violations. We will not provide personal data until compelled to do so, once such requests are made and verified.
Requests for personal data from EU, US or other foreign agencies will be complied with either through, or on the order of UK authorities only.
(d) To provide protection for our legitimate users against malicious use of our service, including but not limited to spam and phishing.
IP addresses collected in this manner are done so under the GDPR lawful bases for processing of “legitimate interest”.
For the purpose of our URL shortening service, the legitimate interests are:
(a) Our need to provide safety and security for our users and the general internet using public.
(b) Our need to prevent further access to our systems from malicious or illegal users.
(c) Our need to provide additional information to law enforcement agencies in the event our system is used to break serious UK, US and EU laws.
(d) Our need for a method of complying with short URL deletion requests, and other personal data requests from UK, EU and US residents who have not created a user account.
(e) Our obligation to fulfil the above needs while collecting the minimum personal data possible from our users.
Note: By clicking the “shorten” button when creating a free short URL, you are agreeing to our terms and conditions, this privacy policy, and consenting to the collection of your IP address. However, under GDPR this DOES NOT mean the collection of your IP address is done so on a “consent” basis. For the purpose of IP collection from free users, the lawful basis is “legitimate interest” as explained above.
Why we collect this data: We collect IP address information to provide security, protect our users against the malicious use of our system, to fulfil legal obligations, and to comply with future user data requests without the need for account creation. - When clicking a POR.Nz short URL: When clicking a POR.Nz short URL, you will be redirected to the original long URL. Your IP address will be noted by our system and used to infer your location. Your location data will be no more specific than country or state. Combined with the referring website, this provides basic statistical information to the short URL creator and other public users.
Your IP address is not logged, stored, or further processed so you can not be personally identified by us, other users, or the public in any way.
Why we collect this data: Your IP address is used to obtain your general location for anonymous statistical reporting and is not stored or further collected once the location data has been obtained.
2c. Failure to provide personal data.
We will only collect personal data which is required for specific reasons such as the operation of our services, the website, or the fulfilment of services provided.
You are under no obligation to provide us with any information requested, however please be aware that if you fail to provide information when requested, we may not be able to provide you with services offered or fulfil any contract we have or are trying to enter into with you.
Examples of this include but are not limited to: Not being able to fulfil a purchase order without contact and payment details.
Not being able to process a request for a website user account without contact details.
Not being able to enter you into any competitions or promotions without the requested details for the promotion being supplied.
(Note: If you request your IP address is removed from our database after creating a short URL, this will also result in the removal of all short URLs related to your IP address. To protect the safety of our users and the legal compliant running of our service, we will not store URL details without IP address details of the creating user).
3. How we use your personal data.
- We will only use your personal data in accordance with the UK Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK GDPR.
- We will only collect, use, and process your personal data if we have a specific legitimate and lawful business requirement for which the processing of your data is a part.
- We most commonly use your data for the fulfilment of contracts we may have with you, the proper operation of services which we may provide you, and to generate a better understanding of how to improve our services.
- We will only use your data where it does not override your fundamental legal rights regarding the use of such data.
- We may use your data to contact you with marketing emails or to provide you with other subscription services by email, post, or phone. We will only do this with your specific opt-in permission.
- We may use your data to register you as a new client or to set up a website user account.
- We may use your data to process any online orders placed and to deliver any products or services to you.
- We may use your data to manage our relationship with you, such as notifying you of any changes in our terms of use or privacy policies.
- We may use your data to enable you to partake in competitions, promotions, surveys and to provide us with feedback.
- We may use your data to manage and protect our business and websites. Including data analysis, troubleshooting, system testing, traffic analysis, spam and malicious activity protection.

- We may include your data in analytics which enable us to improve our websites and services and to provide a better user experience.
3a. Who we may share your data with.
We will only share your directly collected personal data outside of our company for selected specific reasons. We do not sell personal data from either free or premium users.
- Third party marketing: We will obtain your express consent to share your details with third party companies for marketing purposes, such as sponsored competitions and promotions.
- Debt recovery: We reserve the right to transfer your contact and transaction details to a third party collection agency in the event any funds due to us for services or items provided, or contracts breached are not received after all other reasonable attempts at recovery have been exhausted. In this instance we will provide you with adequate warning in writing by post and/or email.
- Law enforcement: We will pass your details onto any relevant law enforcement agencies only if it is required of us to do so by UK law. If such requests are made by any agency outside of the UK, we will seek legal advice from relevant UK authorities immediately.
- Company, website and asset transfers: We may transfer your details to a third party company in the event our company is sold or merged with another company, or a company asset or website to which your details are linked is sold or transferred.
In such an instance, this privacy policy would continue to apply until such time as it is updated or replaced. - Third party service providers: Your data may be indirectly shared with third party companies which we use to gather such data on our behalf, or whose services we use on our websites. Such as analytic service providers whose systems gather usage data on our behalf.
3b. International transfers.
In certain circumstances we may be required to transfer your data to or through third parties outside of the UK. This will be for one of the following reasons:
(a) A promotion offered to our users from a US or other foreign company. We will inform you using specific terms if this is going to be the case when we are collecting your data.
(b) The transfer and storage of data to servers and data centers located outside of the UK for operational purposes.
(c) The collection or storage of data on servers located outside the UK belonging to technology providers we use, such as analytics and advertising services or cloud based remote services such as customer management and email systems.
(d) Transfers of data to foreign government or law enforcement officials if required after authorisation by relevant UK authorities.
When transferring data in this way, we follow strict rules.
We will not transfer data to countries or companies which do not provide levels of protection deemed adequate by UK regulators.
(Note: Following both the UK’s withdrawal from the EU and the 2020 ruling by The Court of Justice of the European Union, the transfer of data from the UK to the US under the Privacy Shield framework is no longer valid. Such transfers will be covered by Standard Contractual Clauses between us and the US companies in question).
4. How long we retain your data.
- We will only retain your personal data for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected. This includes the additional purposes of satisfying any reporting, accounting or legal requirements under UK, EU or US (where applicable) law.
- When determining appropriate data retention periods we take into account the reason for us obtaining the data, the amount of data obtained, the nature and sensitivity of the data and the potential risk from any unauthorised use or disclosure.
- Some data we are legally obliged to keep for a specific period of time, such as basic information about e-commerce or service customers including contact, financial and transaction data. We must retain this data for at least 6 years for UK tax purposes.
- If you have any queries regarding the retention period of your data please use the contact details at the top of this policy.
- If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
- For users that register a premium account, we also store the personal information you provide in your user profile. You can see, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (except changing your username).
- For users creating free short links, your IP address data will be retained as long as the link is active in our database.
5. How we secure your data.
- We have in place appropriate security measures to prevent the accidental loss or unauthorised access of your data.
Access to your personal data is restricted to a need to know basis for both company employees as well as contractors and third parties. If a person or agent does not have a need to know they will not be issued authorised access to your data. - All digital data will be stored securely in password protected encrypted systems.
- Where data is kept on or transferred to physical formats, for example printed delivery notes or certain legal contracts. This data will be kept in secure access restricted or locked areas unless in immediate use.
- We have procedures in place to deal with any suspected data breach and will notify both you and any applicable regulator where we are legally required to do so.
- Data sent to us through the website is encrypted and secured. Our website traffic is protected by SSL security.
You can check this by ensuring every page you visit on our website begins with “https” and no insecure website warnings are displayed. In most browsers you may click on the icon next to the URL in the address bar to view the full details of the website’s security certificate.
6. Your legal rights.
As a company we operate under the laws of the United Kingdom. We will treat all personal data the same, regardless of your country of residence.
As an individual Under GDPR you have 8 specific legal rights.
You can click on the titles of each right for more detailed information from the ICO.
- The right to be informed.
This right means we, as a company, must inform you in a transparent manner of what personal data we collect, why we are collecting it, what we will be using it for, how long we will keep it, and our legal basis for doing so. Fulfilling our initial obligations regarding this right is the main purpose of this privacy policy. - The right of access.
This is your right to know about, and obtain, any of your personal data we may hold. Commonly referred to as ‘subject access’. It also includes your right to know specifics of how we are processing each element of data, how long we will keep it and the data’s source. - The right to rectification.
This is your right to have inaccurate data corrected or incomplete data completed. - The right to erasure.
Otherwise known as ‘the right to be forgotten’. This is your right to have your personal data completely erased. However, this right is not absolute, and only applies in certain circumstances. We can refuse your request if we are required to keep your data to comply with other legal obligations or if your request is manifestly unfounded, excessive or repetitive. - The right to restrict processing.
This is your right to request a suppression of your personal data, where it can be stored but not processed. Usually whilst you are contesting the accuracy of the data or you no longer wish for your data to be processed but require it to be held for legal reasons. - The right to data portability.
This is your right to obtain and reuse your personal data for your own purposes. - The right to object.
This is your right to object to the processing of your data in certain circumstances, such as stopping your data being used for direct marketing purposes. - Rights in relation to automated decision making and profiling.
These are an additional set of rights which cover the use of your data in decision making or individual profiling activities without human involvement.
If you wish to exercise any of your legal rights you can do so verbally or in writing, however we would prefer you use the contact details at the top of this policy in the first instance to help us in tracking your request.
If you chose to exercise your rights, we will have 1 month to reply and can not charge a fee. However if your request is considered manifestly unfounded, excessive or repetitive, we can charge a reasonable administrative fee.
If you are exercising your right to access, we can extend the period to process your request by a further 2 months if you make multiple requests or your request is complex. We will inform you of this within the first month.
We also have the right to ensure the correct individual is making the request by asking for further ID. If this is the case, the time limit for processing your request begins when the required further information is received.
7. California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
The following section is for the benefit of California residents and POR.Nz compliance with California specific privacy regulations.
- Terms in this section are in addition to the remainder of this privacy policy which applies in full to California residents.
- Terms regarding the data we collect, why and how, can be found elsewhere in this policy and apply in full to California residents as part of our obligations under CCPA.
- Based on the personal information collected as part of our service, and as a California resident, the following CCPA rights are relevant when using our service.
(a) The right to request the disclosure of categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected.
(b) The right to request the deletion of any personal information we have collected.
(c) We shall not discriminate and prevent further use of our system to users who exercise any right under CCPA. - California residents may contact us regarding their personal data using the form on our contact page, or the relevant email address listed on the same page.
- This website and service does not feature a “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” page as we already do not sell any of our users personal data to any third party.
- This website and service is restricted for use by adults only, and does not sell personal data. Therefore we have no need to obtain prior permission for the sale of data from minors.
- For the purpose of identifying a user (user verification) when requesting personal information or its deletion, you will be required to provide a close up image of government or state issued photo ID, an image of yourself holding the ID and details which confirm your user account such as full real name, user name, short link details or other account details which only you should know, such as payment details or randomly selected characters from your account password. We will never ask for your full password. (Please report any such request as suspected phishing).
- For the purpose of identifying free users, in addition to the 7.7 you will be required to provide proof of the IP address used to create your short URLs. You may do this by googling “whats my IP”, ensuring Google displays your public IP address in the results, then displaying both the results page and your ID image on your screen at the same time before creating a screenshot of your entire screen. Do not crop or edit this screenshot in any way.
- With regards to submitted ID images and screenshots, all dates must be left intact in the image metadata as this forms part of our procedure in identifying your request as legitimate.
- Any personal information received for user verification will be used only for this purpose.
- Under the terms of the CCPA, we are under no obligation to provide personal information to California residents more than twice in any 12 month period.
- Under the terms of the CCPA you have the right to request the deletion of your personal information, however, we specifically collect user IP addresses to “detect security incidents” and “protect against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activity”. As such, we may refuse your request if we feel complying would prevent us from fulfilling these obligations.
- For free users: As the deletion of your IP address would prevent us from fulfilling our obligations as listed in 7.12, the deletion of your IP address will also result in the complete deletion of your short link or links.
- We may exercise our right under CCPA to refuse requests, if such requests prevent us from fulfilling our legal obligations under UK law as a UK business.
- Under the amendment to CCPA section 1798.130(1)(A), we do not provide a toll free number for those wishing to exercise their rights under CCPA. We are a business operating exclusively online with direct relationships with our users.
- Under CCPA we have 45 days to provide any requested information. Our own policy is to provide such information within 30 days to comply with GDPR. We may extend this by a further 45 days for California residents when reasonably necessary.
7a. CalOPPA “Do Not Track” disclosure.
- Under the California Online Privacy Protection Act, we are obliged to inform you how we respond to web browser “Do Not Track” (DNT) signals for our legal operation in the state of California.
- POR.Nz does not currently respond to DNT signals for the following reasons:
(a). There is currently no recognised industry standard for sending, recognising or responding to DNT signals.
(b). POR.Nz tracks user clicks in an anonymous manner to provide statistical data on short URL interactions, but does not track users in a manner from which identifying information can be obtained.
(c). POR.Nz does not track users across third party websites once the redirection from the POR.Nz short URL to the original long URL is complete.
(d). Although unlikely, it is possible that responding to DNT signals could interfere with the correct operation of the URL shortening service, resulting in unexpected errors.
(e). It is currently against our terms and conditions (4d.4) to use our service alongside any software, script or browser which modifies any visual aspect or operational function of our service or website in a way which was not intended by us. - You may be tracked through this website or our URL shortening system by third parties for analytical or advertising purposes.
- Neither this website or URL shortening service uses any form of social media tracking. Any such tracking discovered when following a POR.Nz short URL is originating from either the target URL or the website on which the short URL was posted.
8. Complaints.
We will always endeavour to fulfil our obligations with your data, and appreciate the chance to deal with any concerns you may have directly. However, you also have the right to complain at any time to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) who are the UK supervisory authority for data protection issues at ico.org.uk.
9. Statement of Good Faith
POR.Nz is an online service available worldwide.
While our primary focus is on complying with UK regulations, we understand our users are based in multiple countries, each with their own data protection and privacy regulations.
When necessary to ensure legal compliance in a country, territory or state in which our users are based, we will include specific terms covering them and their area.
We believe that in following the strict terms of the UK GDPR we are also providing adequate cover and meet the requirements of other countries, territories and states.
Any failure to meet the requirements of any non UK area is wholly unintentional.
If you feel this privacy policy does not meet the legal requirements in your country, territory or state, please contact us with the relevant details so we may update our terms accordingly.
